OPA Update August 27, 2021

August 27, 2021

Dear OPA Families and Staff,

Thank you for a wonderful first full week of school!! It was great seeing all our champions this week and the wonderful classroom activities happening across both campuses and our virtual learning program.

Thank you to everyone that joined us for our Board meeting last night. The main topic discussed at the meeting was our COVID-19 safety procedures. There are several current mandates that all public schools in California must follow. These include the following:

  • All staff and student must wear a face covering while indoors.
  • All school staff must show proof of full COVID-19 vaccination or be tested weekly. The mandate does not take effect until October 15, but OPA fully implemented this mandate last week.
  • All students must be provided a virtual learning option if they are not comfortable attending classes in person. This option must include daily face to face interactions. To meet this mandate, OPA has created the OPA Virtual Learning Program to provide rigorous, standards-based virtual learning using the same curriculum and instructional strategies that are used in our seat-based program. This program is similar to the virtual learning implemented last school year and includes daily synchronous learning time for all students.
  • Students who have a close contact with a positive case can chose a modified quarantine as long as both the student and the positive case were wearing masks during the close contact.  Modified quarantine means that the student may remain on campus as long as they wear a mask at all times and remain symptom free. The student must also be tested for COVID-19 twice per week for 10 days.

The OPA Board of Directors and the OPA staff and administration are dedicated to ensuring that our champions are safe and healthy and able to participate in on-campus learning activities. OPA will adhere to all state and local health mandates, and continue to follow our safety protocols. Please help us to ensure that our champions continue to be able to attend school in person by encouraging everyone to follow health and safety guidelines. Also, if your champion is exposed to a positive COVID-19 case, tests positive for COVID-19, or has any COVID-19 symptoms, please reach out to the attendance office as soon as possible.

If you would like to have your champion tested for COVID-19, we are offering free, voluntary PCR testing at each of our sites twice a week. To sign your champion up for testing, please fill out the testing form and contact your school’s health office for an appointment when you can be present or to give your consent for your student to be tested without a parent/guardian present. For SOC, reach out to tlimon@opaschools.org. For SV, reach out to laguilar@opaschools.org

Due to the recent rise in COVID-19 cases and the increased transmissibility of the Delta Variant, it was decided that this year’s University Orientation will be virtual. We want to ensure that this large family event does not lead to a rise in cases at OPA and a disruption to the learning environment. However, we understand how eager our families are to participate in on-campus activities, so we will be planning some future outdoor activities for parents.   Chancellors will be providing more information as these events are planned.

University Orientation for our South Orange County campus will be Wednesday, September 1st and University Orientation for our Saddleback Valley campus and our Virtual Learning Program will be Thursday, September 2nd.  Students will have a minimum day on the day of their school’s University Orientation.

I can’t wait to see everyone virtually this Wednesday and Thursday! Stay safe, stay healthy, and have a wonderful weekend.
