Dear OPA Families and Staff,
Happy Women’s History Month! This month is a time for all of us to recognize the incredible accomplishments women have made throughout history and the need for us to continue to push our young women champions to strive for greatness and support each other to fulfill their dreams. As Maya Angelou exclaimed, "Each time a woman stands up for herself, without knowing it possibly, without claiming it, she stands up for all women."
This week has been very busy at OPA. We had a great English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC) meeting on Tuesday. Our chancellors provided information about the Local Control and Accountability Plans (LCAPs) and Ms. Didion shared information about ELPAC testing and English Language Development instruction, and we even had a few students share about their experiences with the ELPAC test. Thank you to all of our families who attended.
This week both campuses also held their Virtual Showcase events. Although this year, we could not have Open House in person, the Virtual Showcase events were a great success. The professors had wonderful, engaging activities for families to participate in. I’m not sure I’m smarter that a 3rd grader, though, after attending some of the sessions! It was wonderful to see all of our families, even if it had to be a virtual event. However, with the decreases in COVID-19 numbers, I am optimistic that we will be able to bring back more in person events in the near future.
Currently, Orange County, Los Angeles County, and San Bernardino County have COVID-19 numbers that fall within the Red Tier. Therefore, it appears that these counties will be able to move to the Red, less restrictive tier possibly as early as this weekend. This will mean more businesses will be able to open for in-person activities. We are hoping this continued positive trend will mean more in-person activities for our OPA students. However, we will continue to follow all health and safety guidelines, including social distancing and face masks. We are excited, though, that we will be having cross country at each site and we are looking at other possible safe, in person activities. Please look out for more information from your chancellors.
Due to COVID-19, kids are spending more time than ever online, so it is a good time to reinforce expectations regarding safety and how to treat others with kindness and respect when communicating from behind a screen. The Orange County Department of Education (OCDE) Bullying Prevention program offers a Cyberbullying and Digital Drama workshop for parents. This presentation is currently available online in a self-guided format and can be accessed at Cyberbullying and Digital Drama Parent Workshop.
Please note that Open Enrollment will be ending on March 19, 2021. If you would like to enroll a new student in Oxford Preparatory Academy, please make sure to visit www.applyopa.com and fill out an application before the deadline.
We are still looking for volunteers to be part of our Local Control and Accountability (LCAP) Committees for each of our school sites. These committees will help our sites shape the goals and actions to meet the needs of our champions for the next three years. If you would like to volunteer for this committee or receive more information, please reach out to your school chancellor.
I want to thank all of our families and staff for your tireless dedication and flexibility over the past year. It has been almost exactly one year since we had to shut down our schools and begin virtual learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It has been an incredibly difficult time for all of us, but because of all of you, our OPA champions have still been able to thrive and excel academically, socially, and emotionally. As Serena Williams stated, “I really think a champion is defined not by their wins but by how they can recover when they fall.” Our entire OPA community has risen to the challenge of COVID-19 like champions, and I am so proud to be part of this amazing team.
Have a wonderful weekend OPA. Thank you for all you do for our Champions!
